The short answer is the 10th. The one you really care about is another: when you will see the first deposit after applying, because that is where most people end up with an empty account and no idea why. This page has both, the payment calendar and the journey of the first payment.
Payment day: the 10th of each month
The SEPE (Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal, Spain’s public employment service) deposits the benefit on the 10th of each month. If the 10th is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, it is deposited on the next working day. Some banks have agreements with the SEPE and bring the deposit forward a few days; that is not a rule, it is a service from your bank.
This is the calendar for the coming months:
| Month | Payment day | What falls on that day | Days you are paid for |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | Tuesday 10 | Working day | October |
| December 2026 | Thursday 10 | Working day | November |
| January 2027 | Monday 11 | The 10th is a Sunday | December |
| February 2027 | Wednesday 10 | Working day | January |
| March 2027 | Wednesday 10 | Working day | February |
With this rule, the October 2026 payment (the 10th was a Saturday and Monday 12 is a national holiday) moves to Tuesday 13. It is the kind of detail that explains empty accounts from one day to the next.
Why the first payment arrives late
Paro is paid in arrears. On 10 November you do not receive November, but what you earned in October. And the SEPE closes the payroll at the end of the month. Put the two together and this is the journey:
- You apply for paro. From the application, the SEPE has a period to resolve (around 15 days is used) and another to notify you.
- The right is recognised. The benefit starts on the date that corresponds to you: the day after you stopped working if you applied on time.
- It goes into payroll. If your application is resolved before the month’s payroll cut-off, you are paid on the 10th of the following month.
- If it does not make the cut-off, the first payment is delayed a month and paid with arrears.
An example with dates. Your contract ends on Wednesday 30 September 2026 and you apply on Monday 5 October. The SEPE resolves it in mid-October.
- Your right starts on 1 October.
- Your first payment arrives on Tuesday 10 November, and covers 1 to 31 October.
- With a benefit of €840 a month, that first deposit would be €840 gross.
If instead the decision is delayed until 2 November, the first deposit moves to 10 December and that transfer brings October and November together: €1,680. You do not lose money, but it arrives a month later, and what counts for your bank account is that date.
In two words: between the end of the contract and the first deposit there are, with luck, about six weeks. If you are left without a salary and have fixed costs, count on that gap before you run out of cushion.
What delays the first payment
- Applying late. Every day of delay moves the start of the right. See the 15-day deadline.
- A missing company certificate. Without it, the SEPE cannot calculate the base.
- A request for documents that you do not answer in time.
- A lapsed or missing job-seeker registration. It is explained in how to renew unemployment benefit.
- Holiday paid in the finiquito. While it lasts you are not in the legal situation of unemployment and the paro does not start.
- Silence. If three months pass without an answer, the application is considered rejected by administrative silence, and a prior claim can be filed.
What to do if it does not arrive
- Check the status of your application in the SEPE online office, on 060 or at an office with an appointment.
- Check that you have no pending request in your electronic mailbox.
- Check that your job-seeker registration is active.
- Confirm that your IBAN is correct in the application.
- Keep the application confirmation with its date: it is useful for claiming if the delay is the SEPE’s.
How to budget the first month without a salary
The gap between the last salary and the first deposit is the most delicate moment. These are the items to look at before it arrives.
- Final settlement (finiquito). You receive it on leaving, or on the company’s usual pay date. It is a real cushion for those weeks: check that it includes holiday and extra pay. It is explained in how to calculate your finiquito.
- Fixed monthly costs. Rent, utilities, insurance. Ask for the shortest notice possible and tell your bank if you expect a delay.
- Withholdings. Income tax is withheld from paro depending on your situation. What reaches your account is lower than the gross figure in the decision.
- Payment in arrears. If the contract ends mid-month, the first deposit includes only the days from the start of the right to the end of the month. With a benefit of €840 a month, a right that started on the 13th would have 18 days and pay 18 × €28 = €504.
Subsidy and other payments
People who receive a subsidy instead of contributory benefit are also paid in arrears. Each region may handle income checks differently and the SEPE resolves each case. Nor are self-employed workers with cessation-of-activity benefit paid on the same day: their mutual insurer handles it, and payment usually arrives at the end of the month.
To plan your income, also check how long unemployment benefit lasts in Spain against your recognised contributions.
Arrears and double payments
If the first deposit includes two months, the transfer arrives together but is broken down in the statement. Do not be alarmed if you see a larger figure than expected: it is arrears. Check that the months added are the right ones and keep the statement.
How much you get
The amount depends on your base and dependent children: it is worked out for four salaries in how much unemployment benefit you get by salary. And if you have not applied yet, the order of the steps is in how to apply for unemployment.
This page is informational. Deposit dates can vary with each year’s holiday calendar: confirm yours with the SEPE.
