“Renewing paro” is not one thing. Behind that phrase there are at least three different procedures, with different deadlines and different consequences if you miss them. If you do not know which one is yours, the risk is not doing it badly: it is doing one when another was due. Here they are separated.
The three meanings of “renewing paro”
| What you want to do | What it is called | When it is due |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your registration as a job seeker alive | Renew the demanda de empleo (the DARDE) | On the date printed on your document |
| Go back to receiving a benefit that stopped | Resume the benefit | 15 working days after the suspension cause ends |
| Receive a different paro | Apply for a new benefit | When you lose another job and meet the requirements |
Renewing the job-seeker registration (the DARDE)
The DARDE is the document that proves you are registered as a job seeker (demandante de empleo). It carries a printed renewal date. That is what people call sellar el paro (stamping the paro), although no stamp is needed any more.
- Where. On the online office of the SEPE (Spain’s public employment service) or of your region’s employment service, by phone or at the office, depending on the region.
- When. On the day on your document, or within its window. If your region uses another one, its rule prevails.
- What happens if you do not. You are removed as a job seeker and, if you receive a benefit, payment is suspended automatically. This does not apply to people who combine paro with a full-time job through the employment support supplement.
- Penalties. For not renewing on time, penalties can apply. The scale in article 47 of the LISOS (the social-order offences law) is one, three and six months of lost benefit for minor offences, with termination at the fourth; for serious ones it is three months, six months and termination at the third. Which offence applies depends on the specific conduct (failing to meet the activity commitment, for example, is minor under article 24.3.c), so check your decision.
The classic mistake is believing that if you are not receiving money this month, you do not need to renew. You do: removal from the register cuts everything else.
Resuming a suspended paro
A paro is suspended when you start work, when you go abroad in certain cases or when a penalty is applied. When that cause ends, it does not restart by itself.
- Deadline. 15 working days from the end of the cause. It is the same clock you already know from applying for paro.
- If you are late. The benefit resumes from the date you request it, and the days between the end of the cause and that date are lost.
- How. Through the online office with a digital certificate, electronic ID or access code, through the online pre-application, or by appointment at the office. Take proof of the cause and its end, such as the company certificate if you worked.
- If the job lasted less than twelve months. Article 271.1.d suspends the benefit and what was left resumes. If it lasts longer, you can choose between resuming or claiming a new benefit with the contributions from the recent job.
An example. Dani was receiving paro with 240 days left, found a four-month contract and suspended the benefit. The contract ends on Wednesday 30 September. He has until Thursday 22 October to request resumption (15 working days, with 12 October as a holiday). If he asks on Monday 26, he is two working days late, four calendar days, and those days are deducted from the 240 he had left.
When to claim a new paro
If the job you have just left is long and you have contributed more than what remains to collect, a new benefit may work out better than resuming the old one. You do not have to decide from memory: request your vida laboral and compare the days with the table in how long you can receive unemployment benefit. Remember that days already used in a previous paro do not count again.
How to avoid missing it
Most problems with renewal come from the same place: the date lives on a paper or an online office you do not open. Three habits solve it.
- Write the renewal date in your phone calendar the day you register, with an alert a week before and another the day before.
- Turn on notifications from the online office or your region’s employment service, by SMS or email, if offered.
- Download the confirmation each time you renew and keep it with your paro papers. If there is a dispute about a date, it is your proof.
Do not forget appointments either: if the employment service calls you to an interview or a course and you do not go without justification, it can count as a different infringement from not renewing.
If you are penalised
If you receive a decision with a penalty for not renewing in time, do not let it pass:
- Read which date and cause it mentions. Compare it with your confirmation.
- If you have a justified reason (hospitalisation, a failure of the online office, an error by the service itself), present it in writing with evidence.
- Respect the deadline to appeal shown in the decision; it is short.
- Keep everything, including screenshots of the online office.
What to do if you have missed the date
- Check your document or log in to see the renewal date and whether the registration is still active.
- Regularise as soon as possible. If the registration has lapsed, register again as a job seeker.
- Ask for payment to resume if it was suspended, and keep the confirmations.
- Do not accept a penalty without reading the decision. Check the deadlines and causes; if you disagree, you have the right to appeal.
- Note the next date in your phone calendar with an alert a few days before.
Questions people ask
- Do I have to renew if I am on sick leave? Check your case with the SEPE or your employment service: it depends on the situation and the benefit.
- What if I work part-time? With a subsidy you must renew every three months. Details are in working while claiming unemployment.
- Why is there no stamp now? Everything is recorded electronically; the word stays out of habit.
