Applying for paro (contributory unemployment benefit) is not hard, but it is a procedure where order matters: if you do it in the wrong sequence you lose weeks, and if you miss the deadline you lose days of benefit. This page gives you the sequence, the documents and the list of errors that cost most, written so you can do it in an afternoon.
The right order, in six steps
1. Check that you qualify (10 minutes)
Before anything else, see whether you meet the requirements: 360 days contributed in the last six years and a loss of employment that gives the right. It is in am I entitled to unemployment benefit. If you doubt your days, request the vida laboral: how to request and read it.
2. Note your deadline
Count 15 working days from the last day of your contract. With that date in your phone, the rest of the procedure is done without undue rush. How they are counted, with examples, is in the deadline to apply for paro.
3. Register as a job seeker
It is a requirement for paro and gives you the job-seeker card. It is done at the public employment service of your region (comunidad autónoma), online or in person depending on the territory. When you register you sign the activity commitment: you agree to look for work and take part in the actions they propose.
4. Prepare the documents
| Document | What it is for |
|---|---|
| ID, NIE or passport | To identify you |
| Job-seeker card | To prove your registration |
| Company certificate (certificado de empresa) | To calculate your base. The employer sends it to the SEPE |
| Family book (libro de familia) | If you have dependent children, to raise the caps |
| Part-time contracts from the last 6 years | Only if there were any |
| IBAN of your account | To get paid |
5. File the application
You have three routes:
- SEPE online office, with a digital certificate, electronic ID or Cl@ve. It is the fastest.
- Online pre-application, without strong identification. It is sent online and completed later.
- In person, with an appointment at the benefits office.
What must be done within the 15 working days is the application or the appointment request. If they give you an appointment later, nothing happens: the date you asked counts. Keep the confirmation.
6. Answer requests
If the SEPE asks you for a document, you have a short period to provide it. Check your electronic mailbox and your email every few days in the following weeks. An unanswered request blocks payment.
- Check your unemployment situation
- Register as a jobseeker
- Gather identification and the company certificate
- Submit the application and retain the receipt
How long it takes and when you get paid
The SEPE works with about 15 days to resolve and 10 more to notify. The first payment arrives on the 10th of the following month, in arrears, and if the decision is late it moves a month. I explain it with dates in when unemployment benefit is paid. And how much you will receive, with a specific salary, is in the amounts table.
The errors that cost days or late payment
- Waiting for the company certificate. You do not need it to book an appointment or file the application. The deadline is what matters.
- Not registering as a job seeker. Without the card the application stalls.
- Counting Saturdays in the 15 days. Only working days count.
- Going to the appointment without the papers. You can lose the appointment and start again.
- Writing the IBAN wrongly. If the SEPE orders payment to an account that does not exist, the payment is returned and delayed a cycle.
- Not reading the mailbox. Requests arrive electronically; if you do not open them, the deadline runs anyway.
- Applying while holiday pay from the finiquito runs, without realising. Until those days of registration end, the paro does not start.
- Assuming that challenging the dismissal pauses the procedure. It does not.
An example calendar
Elena’s contract ends on Friday 2 October 2026.
| Date | What she does |
|---|---|
| Saturday 3 October | Requests her vida laboral and adds her days |
| Monday 5 October | Registers as a job seeker |
| Tuesday 6 October | Files the application in the online office |
| Mid-October | The SEPE resolves |
| Tuesday 10 November | First payment, with the days of October |
Elena has left a margin of almost three weeks to the limit, which is Monday 26 October. A slip that costs her a week does not become serious.
Special cases
If you are paid holiday in the finiquito. Those days are registered days and the paro starts when they end. Count the deadline from the following day. It is in unused holiday pay in your final settlement.
If you challenge the dismissal. Apply for paro anyway. Paro and the challenge are independent procedures. If you win the case, the SEPE adjusts what you received.
If you are dismissed while on sick leave. You keep receiving sick pay and apply for paro when that situation ends. Check your date with the SEPE.
If you have worked outside Spain. Periods contributed in other European Union countries may add up. Ask Social Security for the relevant certificate.
To plan your income, also check how long unemployment benefit lasts in Spain against your recognised contributions.
If you chose to leave, check the specific rules on resignation and unemployment benefit in Spain before relying on a payment.
If you live in a region with its own employment service. Registration as a job seeker is done with the regional service, and the benefit is handled by the SEPE. They are two bodies and two procedures.
What to do after applying
- Watch your electronic mailbox and email for requests.
- Keep the application confirmation with its date.
- Check your decision when it arrives: base, percentages, length and start date.
- Renew the job-seeker registration on the date given, so payment does not stop. See how to renew unemployment benefit.
- Report any change: a job, a trip abroad, a change of address or account.
If the decision does not match your calculations, you have a period to file a prior claim before going to court. Check the deadlines stated in the document itself.
What to do today
- Put day 15 in your calendar.
- Request your vida laboral if you do not have it.
- Register as a job seeker.
- File the application without waiting for the company certificate.
