The cita previa (appointment) at the SEPE (Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal, Spain’s public employment service) is the step that drags on most, but it is not what decides whether you lose days of paro (unemployment benefit). What decides it is the date you request it. This page tells you how to order the process, which papers are usually needed and which mistakes cost money. The SEPE website could not be consulted for this page, so the document list is given in general terms: the SEPE confirms it when it gives you the appointment.
Book the appointment as soon as you lose your job, even if the date is far off
Article 268.1 of the Ley General de la Seguridad Social (General Social Security Act, LGSS) provides that the right to paro arises with the legal situation of unemployment if you apply within the following fifteen days. The guide to the deadline to apply for paro explains that the SEPE counts these as working days and that, according to its information, what counts is the day you request the appointment or file the application, not the day you are seen. Keep the confirmation.
If you are late, article 268.2 recognises the benefit from the application date, but you lose as many days as lie between the start of the right and that date.
An example with dates and euros
Lucía’s contract ends on Wednesday 30 September 2026. She would receive €840 a month of paro, that is €28 a day. The right would arise on 1 October. With 12 October a public holiday, her 15th working day is Thursday 22 October.
| What she does | Date | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Requests the appointment | Thursday 8 October | Within the deadline (day 6). She is given an appointment for 3 November |
| Attends the appointment | Tuesday 3 November | The right starts on 1 October, under the SEPE’s approach of counting the request date |
| If she had asked for nothing until that date | Tuesday 3 November | Out of time: the right starts on 3 November |
If she had waited until 3 November, she loses the days from 1 October to 2 November, which is 33. At €28 a day: 33 × 28 = €924 less benefit. Same appointment, same day, same papers; the only change is when she asked.
Which documents are usually needed
There is no list this site can guarantee. This is what is usually needed and what has a basis in the law:
| Document or item | What for | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| DNI, NIE or passport | Identify you | You have it |
| IBAN of an account in your name | To be paid the benefit | Your bank |
| Registration as a job seeker | Requirement of the application (art. 268.1) | Your region’s employment service |
| Signed activity agreement | Signed on the application date (art. 268.1) | On registering or applying |
| Company certificate | Cause, date and contributions | The employer transmits it; see what it contains |
| Details of dependent children | They can raise the benefit caps | Family book or equivalent documents |
| A means of receiving notifications | The law obliges you to give an address or electronic means (art. 299.1.b) | Your details |
To apply for the subsidy there is more: a sworn statement of your income, and your household’s if relevant, for the previous calendar month (art. 275.6). It is covered in the unemployment subsidy.
What you do not need to wait for
- The finiquito. You do not need it to book the appointment or file the application. The 15 days run regardless.
- A paper copy of the company certificate. What matters is that the employer sends it or that you chase it; the appointment is booked anyway.
- The ruling, if you challenge a dismissal. The dismissal is a legal situation of unemployment in itself, and challenging it does not stop the right from arising (art. 268.4).
What to ask when you are seen
The appointment is short, so it helps to leave with concrete answers. These four questions save calls later:
- From what date does my right start? Note it down: how much you receive in the first payment depends on it.
- How many days of benefit have been recognised? Compare them with the table in how long unemployment benefit lasts.
- Is any document missing? Ask for a record of what you are asked for and the date.
- What do I have to do from now on? Article 299 of the LGSS requires you, among other things, to look for work actively, to attend when summoned, to report changes of address and to ask for the benefit to be stopped if an incompatibility arises.
Also ask for proof of the application, even a screenshot or an email. If a disagreement over dates or amounts comes later, that paper settles it.
After the appointment: do not lose paro over a paper
If the SEPE requests a document and you do not provide it within the time, the right may be suspended until you do (art. 271.1.h). Check your email and electronic mailbox in the following weeks, and make sure your job-seeker registration stays active: without it the benefit is suspended (art. 271.1.i). For the payment calendar, see when paro is paid.
Why your case may be different
- Each region runs job-seeker registration through its own employment service, and the procedure can vary.
- If a third person goes with you, how to prove representation depends on the procedure; ask how to do it.
- If your contract was part-time, you may be asked for additional contribution data.
- If you have worked in another European country, documents from there may be needed to add your contributions.
- If you cannot attend in person, ask about the online route; applying online with secure identification is an alternative.
